GPS: Lat: 39° 47' 19N,     Long: 19° 55' 7E

Approach: Whether you arrive from the north or the south, Kassiopi's main characteristic is the ruins of the castle on the hill north of the harbour. Today the castle is surrounded by modern and more visible dwellings. The harbour is 1.8 miles south of the islet Peristerai which has a lighthouse with a flashing red light. When approaching from the north-west one must keep about 100 meters from the coast to avoid shoals a little to the north-west of the harbour. The harbour itself is not visible when one approaches from the north-west parallel to the shoreline until one is in front of its entrance. Care is needed to avoid the unfinished unlit breakwater in the east part of the entrance.

Mooring: The harbour of Kassiopi (Kassopeto on maps) provides mooring secure from the Maistro. Problems arise when strong south-westerly winds prevail because of waves rebounding off the opposite coast of Albania and with a strong northeasterly. There is space for a limited number of craft (5-6) among the fishing boats behind the north mole, but one must beware the rocks protruding from its base below the surface; it is advisable to approach bows-to. The depth is about three meters. Craft drawing up to 1.8 meters may go bows-to at the far end of the harbour about 20 meters east of the monument. Care is needed because in front of the monument and on the eastern side there are shallows. The sea-bed has weeds and thus care should be taken when dropping anchor.

Further information: Kassiopi is a welldeveloped tourist destination where one may buy any kind of groceries, fresh fruit, English -language books and newspapers. Fuel in ferry-cans from a nearby fuel station.

Numerous restaurants of good quality, bars, coffee-shops on the beach and in the village. Lovely swimming beaches around the fortress peninsula and in Imerolia bay north of the fortress. Kassiopi is one of Corfu's most ancient sites. Remains of an ancient temple were excavated directly behind the harbour. Tradition has it that Nero stopped off on his way to Corinth and gave an impromptu song recital which, bearing in mind his reputation, the locals no doubt admired enthusiastically. Sadly, the fortress is greatly damaged with portions only of its walls remaining; it is surrounded by ugly modern constructions.

Important projects are planned for the harbour including completion of the eastern breakwater and dredging of the entire harbour.
