Approach: It is not easy by day to distinguish the entrance to the bay when approaching from the northwest; however, the monastery on the peak of the peninsula is a characteristic landmark. The harbour is not in the bay of Ayios Spyridon directly east of the monastery, but in Alipa bay which is the subsequent one a little further east. At night approach is easier because of the lighthouse on the eastern point of the bay. When approaching from the northwest care is needed because shoals lie between the rocky islet Skaloudi west of the monastery and the peninsula itself. It is advisable to steer west of the islet and then turn east.

Mooring: The harbour is situated on the western side of the bay and protected by a quay extending north to south. It is usually full of fishing caiques with only a few available berths near the head of the quay, depths 4.0 meters with good holding. Care is needed because in the landward half of the western quay (perpendicular to the breakwater) depth is only 0.5 to 0.6 meters. In summer with a northwesterly one can also safely moor on the outer side of the breakwater at its northern end (further south there are rocks below the surface).
This harbour provides good protection in all weather barring strong southerlies when waves surge over the breakwater and create strong swell in the harbor.
In good weather one may also anchor in Ayios Spyridon bay, east of the monastery, but the yacht should not be left unattended.

Further information: The harbour has no water, fuel may be delivered. There are restaurants on the harbour and in Ayios Spiridon bay. within walking distance on the road to Corfu, there are numerous bars, taverns, supermarkets. The police station is midway between two bays, and the harbour master's office is not far off, on the road to Corfu.
Palaiokastritsa is one of the most spectacularly beautiful sites in Corfu, and one of the first to be developed. The sea in Ay. Spyridon bay is an amazing azure-to-green shade. The monastery up the hill with the church and library with its old books and the bones of a whale washed ashore transports one centuries back in time. For ramblers, an attractive climb is up the path leading to the village of Lakones on the side of the mountain with an exquisite view over a considerable part of Corfu's west coast. Further north, near the village Krini at the top of a cliff with a sheer drop down to the sea, is the romantic ruin of the Byzantine fortress Angelokastro.
